I needed a USB hug which would plug into a USB3 socket on my computer and give me more connections for external hard-drives and card readers. Although I already have a USB2 hub, I wanted to take advantage of the faster connection speeds of USB3, particularly on my new external drives and printer. The HooToo HT-UH002 has the benefit of having four USB3 out sockets so I have plenty of room for adding further peripherals as I acquire them. USB2 devices can also be connected in to the hub.

This is a very solid looking hub and the case is aluminium rather than plastic. I was pleased with it’s compact size and it’s black finish – it looks very smart next to my new PC. It was very easy to install as it does not require the installation of a driver – it is literally “plug and play”.

I was pleased to see that it is a powered hub as my experience of other hubs is that without the mains power the outward sockets cannot drive all the devices connected to them. This one really packs a punch and I have run it with all four sockets connected and they all work fine. An LED light on each socket tell you when the devices are connected.

The USB3 connector is provided to enable you to plug the hub into a USB socket on your PC. A mains power cable is also provided. The device is protected against power surges.

This is a quality piece of equipment which is well worth the cost in my view.

I received this HooToo hub free to test and review.

I am lucky enough to have one of the new slim Macbook pros. I love it, but one downside is that I have only two USB ports, though both are USB 3.0. There are times when I need to plug in a number of devices and one of my ports is pretty much permanently occupied with the dongle for my my fitbit flex Fitbit Flex Wireless Activity Tracker & Sleep Wristband.

I was therefore delighted to be offered this product as I knew I had to buy one so that I would not constantly moving devices. I also knew I needed a USB 3.0 hub as otherwise my data transfer speeds would suffer. I have been using the hub for about a month now and I am very pleased with its performance. Installation was plug and play and I have used it successfully with both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 devices including flash drives, cameras, iPhone 5, Seagate HDDs, Canon printer and iPad. Speed does not seem to have been impacted when moving files and data. There was a warning in the instructions about possible instability with Mac OS below Mountain Lion. I do have Mountain Lion installed and I haven’t had any problems. The hub has a power source for devices needing more power than my laptop can supply. There are 1.5 cm wide spaces between each USB 3.0 ports which prevents overcrowding.

    Pros

    + Straightforward installation
+ Design is good with enough space between ports not to have overcrowding
+ Packaging and instructions are fine
+ LED lights to indicate power
    + No obvious speed degradation
+ Downward compatible with USB 2.0
    + Power supply provided

    Cons
    Nothing to date

Looks and Feels Great, 5 Jan 2014

This USB hub looks and feels great. It doesn’t look ugly on my desk or stand out which is nice. The only issue I have found so far is that when I have more than three USB devices plugged in it has a tendency to cut out randomly which can be quite frustrating.
