Great keyboard. I have this in the US version and it fits perfectly. It is great for general use e.g. Browsing. I would recommend it for someone who types daily, such as a writer, because the keyboard is not big enough. The keyboard has the sleep sensor like the smart covers and the case feels sturdy when using the keyboard. The material feels feels nice and smooth. The keys are easy to press and the keyboard is fully waterproof. If you want a keyboard to use while travelling instead of taking a laptop, then this is great. The only downside is that it’s difficult to get use to using a keyboard without a trackpad.

Excellent product if you want an iPad with a keyboard, not a laptop, 12 Sept. 2016

The way to think of this is as a smart cover that is also a keyboard: it adds little size and weight and protects the screen from scratches and switches the iPad on/off when it is opened/closed. It is a huge step up from the on-screen keyboard for anything that involves text entry because the whole screen is available to show the text you are working on but light and thin enough your iPad is still an iPad, not something substantially bulkier.

Obviously, it is very expensive for what it is. Equally it doesn’t provide heavy duty protection and it isn’t even attached firmly enough to use to lift the iPad. It is a bit of an origami project to get into keyboard or ‘propped up’ configuration. It doesn’t have a backlight so you can’t use it effectively in a darkened room or plane. The key feel is OK but not as good as a proper keyboard.

However. the bottom line is that the size and weight are more important than the features. I’ve got an iPad 9.7″ and my wife has a Microsoft Surface Pro. On paper the surface pro has better specifications and a better keyboard but the iPad is in almost continuous use as a notepad, for games, for watching Netflix, for doing e-mail and the Surface Pro gets used once or twice a month because the iPad is small and light and convenient.

If I’m honest, I wasn’t expecting this to be all that good. I’m a big iPad fan but having a Surface Pro 3 & 4 as my work device, with its kickstand in the tablet, I couldn’t see how having the stand built into the keyboard would work. Or if a fabric keyboard could be any good. Ok, so I’d prefer if the kickstand was in the iPad but of course it isn’t, and this combination of stand, cover and keyboard actually works very well.

As for its competitors, I ruled them all out for the simple reason – I wanted to be able to quickly detach the iPad from the keyboard. All of the magnets used to achieve this are just the right strength. The keyboard detaches with just the right amount of force, the magnet that holds the cover closed is bang on as are the magnets that ‘hide’ the keyboard and the one that supports the stand.

My only complaint is the alternate position for viewing movies, etc where you fold the keyboard to the back of the tablet. In this position the iPad is very upright and barely supported. I wonder if this will improve as the joints loosen up, but for now I just don’t use this layout. And while I’d like some media playback controls on the keyboard, when I eventually start using this other position I won’t have access to those keys anyway.

One more thing – don’t bother with Apple’s £69 silicone case to protect the rear of the iPad, ESR make a great range of covers that work with the smart keyboard and cost £7.
