My opinion of the Neocore N1, 20 Sep 2014

I purchased the Neocore N1 as a budget tablet for performing everyday tasks most people use them for namely email, surfing the interweb, watching videos, listening to music and playing the odd game.

The service provided by Amazon and its associated retailers, in this case MangoMobile, was first class as usual. The N1 was ordered on Monday and delivered on Tuesday. The tablet comes in a sturdy sealed and well protected box; the contents of which includes the tablet with a protective sponge surround, a UK charging adapter, a set of budget headphones, a micro to standard USB cable, a basic instruction manual and a warranty card.

The device feels solid and well engineered. The back has a brushed plastic finish which will help to mask small marks and scratches. The buttons are neat and compact and the various sockets are easily accessible. It has a Micro HDSC card slot which according to the Neocore helpdesk the N1 will handle cards up to 64GB with transfer speeds of 45MB/s. The screen comes with a factory fitted screen protector. It’s so well fitted; on first inspection I didn’t realised it had one until I spotted the tiniest of air bubbles in one corner.

On first power up I noticed the tablet was already partially charged so has obviously been tested prior to leaving the factory. Anyone familiar with the Android operating system will be able to comfortably navigate their way around within a few minutes. The firmware installed is the latest 4.4.2 Kitkat operating system which is user friendly and easy on the eye. The device is very responsive and seamlessly switches from app to app with little or no hesitation. The screen quality is very good for the money, the available viewing angle is a bit limited and the clarity and sharpness is no match for high end tablets like the iPad, but at this price you wouldn’t or shouldn’t expect it to be. The sound output however could be better; the volume is not particularly good even when turned fully up. That said the problem can be easily overcome through the use of some headphones or by connecting the N1 up to a wired or Bluetooth speaker. The rear 2.0MP camera is fine for taking basic pictures in daylight or well lit rooms but is not particularly clear in low light conditions. Every time I tried they came out dark and quite grainy. There’s no built in flash so not really a surprise. The 0.3MP front facing camera is fine for Skype, Viber and other similar video conferencing apps. Wifi works really well, the N1 found my BT HomeHub straight away and connected without a problem. I’ve been using it for over a week and it’s never lost connection, is consistent and stable. Battery life is pretty good too, obviously the more apps you have open and the more demand you put on it the quicker it will drain. Running Bluetooth and Wifi will always cause the juice to drain more quickly. I’ve found The N1 will usually give me at least 3-4 hours run time before needing a recharge. This can comfortably be extended to 4-5 hours if external connections are disabled and its just used for reading books, listening to music through wired headphones, playing less complex games and by turning the screen brightness down a bit.

A couple of years ago a device with similar performance and features to the Neocore N1 would have set you back about £250. There will no doubt be the purists out there who will tell you it’s not as good as the Samsung Galaxy or iPad. This is true, but then an iPad will cost you 500% more. You wouldn’t buy a £13,000 Ford Mondeo and expect it to have the same features, functionality, build quality and performance as a £65,000 Jaguar XF!

The biggest negative for me is the lack of availability of a decent integrated keyboard case. The N1 dimensions are different to any other tablet that has been produced to date, so all aftermarket cases are not really suitable. I have contacted MangoMobile to enquire about case availability and were told new cases are in the pipeline and should be available on Amazon in the coming months.

In summary this is an extremely good tablet for the money. The build quality is good and the N1 will do everything that can be reasonably expected and do it very well. At the time of writing this review there are two other brands of tablet selling on Amazon that are identical to the N1 apart from the logos and the colour of the back cover. These are the Simbans (TM) SX2W and the Fusion5 Xtra Petite4. I suspect all three come out of the same factory in China and are just badged differently. However, the Neocore N1 is currently the cheapest of the three by more than £10 and as far as I am aware is the only one that comes with a full two year warranty support.

If like me, you use customer product feedback as a major part of your decision making process when choosing products, then I hope my endless ramblings has been of some help.

It is clear that if you are looking for a cheap tablet you will have to navigate the sh@t pile of unknown cheap brands out there. After extensive research I feel that one of the best 10 inch tablets at the moment for price is this neocore. It looks quite premium even though the speakers are average so is the screen resolution, and performance is only sufficient.

Let me make it clear that this is no ipad killer, however if you are on a budget and you expect decent performance want to play games, surf net, download a load of apps then this is adequate. The fact that you also get a lengthy warranty is enough to make this stand out over others as the manufactures are obviously standing by their product. If you can stand a smaller screen I suggest a used version of the Hudl 7″ which is better, if you have more money get a used nexus 7 the best, but if you prefer a big screen, something brand new with peace of mind if it should go wrong, then get this.

Pros: Price, Warranty, Good Build, Good Shape, Looks expensive, adequate performace, adequate gaming and surfing

Cons: At this price point there are none unless you want to start comparing with nexus and ipads
